Best Time to Visit Kanha Tiger Reserve

The Forest Stay Team15 October 2025

A complete seasonal guide to planning your Kanha safari — from winter tiger sightings to summer safari tips and monsoon closures.

When to Visit Kanha

Kanha Tiger Reserve is open from October to June. The park remains closed from July to September during the monsoon season.

Month-by-Month Guide

October – November: The Re-Opening

After the monsoon break, the park reopens in October with lush greenery and filled waterholes. Wildlife is abundant but sightings can be tricky as animals are dispersed across the park.

Best for: Birdwatchers, photographers seeking green landscapes, budget travellers.

December – February: Peak Season

This is the most popular time to visit. Cool mornings (8–15°C), tigers and other animals gather near water sources, and visibility is excellent in the thinned-out vegetation.

Best for: Tiger sightings, comfortable temperatures, wildlife photography.

March – May: Pre-Summer

Temperatures rise (30–40°C) but this is arguably the best time for guaranteed tiger sightings. Animals congregate around the few remaining water sources, making sightings predictable.

Best for: Best tiger sighting probability, fewer crowds in April–May.

June: Last Month Before Closure

Very hot (40°C+) but exceptional sighting rates. Park closes mid-June.

Zone Recommendations by Season

Zone Best Season Why
Kanha Zone Year-round Open meadows, consistent barasingha and tiger
Kisli Zone Oct–Mar Dense forest, cooler, good leopard sightings
Mukki Zone Mar–Jun Water proximity makes it excellent in summer
Sarhi Zone Oct–Nov Green landscape post-monsoon

Tips for Your Kanha Visit

  1. Book safaris 45–60 days in advance — permits sell out fast for peak season (Dec–Feb)
  2. Morning safaris are always better for tiger sightings
  3. Zone 1 (Kanha) + Zone 2 (Kisli) give the best chance of seeing barasingha
  4. Carry binoculars — the open meadows reward sharp eyes
  5. Dress in muted earth tones — bright colours disturb wildlife
